The Great White Fleet |
The Great White fleet was 16 battleships sent by President Theodore Rosevelt around the globe. The goal of these ships was to visit countries with friendly visits while displaying the United States naval power. This voyage lasted from December 16, 1907, to February 12, 1909. The ships made it to 6 different continents through their voyage, covering over 43,000 nautical miles. The name "Great White Fleet" was given to these ships because of hulls on the ships being painted stark white. The goal of this voyage was to enforce treaties and to protect overseas holdings. I learned on the naval history website that these ships were manned by 14,000 sailors and marines. Rosevelt saw that if these voyages were successful the United States would be given a sense of naval preparedness, range, and power.
